Whole Body Hyperthermia

At NIIM Gold Coast we are very pleased to be the first Whole Body Hyperthermia clinic in Queensland and New South Wales.  We offer a holistic and alternative treatment for patients with chronic pain and other conditions including immune support for cancer. The treatment is safe, non-toxic and TGA approved, and we have achieved excellent clinical results as part of an ongoing study, combining Hyperthermia, Hyperbaric Oxygen and IV Nutrient and Vitamin Therapy.

Hyperthermia is a medically recognised adjunctive therapy that is widely used in countries such as U.S., Mexico and Germany. The treatment involves an artificially induced increase in body temperature to fever-like temperatures of up to 40°C, in order to stimulate the body’s immune system and self-healing, particularly in cases involving chronic or malignant processes.

Conditions Treated

  • Immune Support for Cancer and other chronic conditions;
  • Chronic pain and inflammation;
  • Fibromyalgia, non-articular rheumatism, muscular tension;
  • Degenerative processes, arthrosis;
  • Broncho-pulmonary (e.g. asthma, bronchitis);
  • Intestinal (e.g. ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease);
  • Urogenital (chronic prostatitis);
  • Dermatological (e.g. neurodermatitis, psoriasis);
  • Chronic infections (e.g. Lyme disease);
  • Malignant diseases (by stimulation of the immune system and enhancement of standard therapies).

 Key Benefits of Hyperthermia

  •  Enhances immune response;
  • Decreases inflammation;
  • Decreases pain;
  • Enhances IV therapy;
  • An adjunct treatment to chemotherapy and radiation;
  • Stimulates self-healing;
  • Increases blood flow, doubling perfusion in tumours;
  • Enhances the delivery of medications;
  • Increases oxygen to the tumour making radiation more likely to kill cancer cells;
  • Promotes reparative and regenerative processes in each individual cell, and in the entire matrix

Hyperthermia Treatment in Cancer

  1. Hyperthermia is used in the treatment of cancer by exposing body tissue to high temperatures (up to 40°C) to stimulate the body’s immune system, and damage cancer cells.
  2. Hyperthermia is almost always used with other forms of cancer therapy, such as low dose radiation therapy, chemotherapy and IV Nutrients, eg. IV Vitamin C.

Using hyperthermia to induce a controlled increase of fever-high temperatures (up to 40°C), can trigger an enhanced immune response in the body, resulting in a sustained stimulation of otherwise inhibited powers of self-healing. Research has shown that high temperatures can damage and kill cancer cells, usually with minimal injury to normal tissues. By killing cancer cells and damaging proteins and structures within cells, hyperthermia may shrink tumors, depending on the degree of hyperthermia.

Hyperthermia may make some cancer cells more sensitive to radiation or harm other cancer cells that radiation cannot damage. When hyperthermia and radiation therapy are combined, they are often given within an hour of each other. Hyperthermia can also enhance the effects of certain anti-cancer drugs.

Numerous clinical trials have studied hyperthermia in combination with radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy. These studies have focused on the treatment of many types of cancer, including: sarcoma, melanoma, and cancers of the head and neck, brain, lung, esophagus, breast,bladder, rectum, liver, appendix, cervix, and peritoneal lining (mesothelioma). Many of these studies, but not all, have shown a significant reduction in tumor size when hyperthermia is combined with other treatments. Whole Body Hyperthermia

Whole-body hyperthermia is an alternative treatment used to treat metastatic cancer that has spread throughout the body. At our clinic we use the TGA approved Heckel HT3000 Whole Body Hyperthermia technology system for providing treatments in cancer care. Used in conjunction with low dose radiation therapy, chemotherapy and IV Nutrient and Vitamin therapy, results are greatly improved.

The hyperthermia unit was developed as a way to more efficiently supply thermal energy to the body and deeper tissues using infrared (IR) radiation. It is a specially designed device in the form of a tent made of a flexible, thermally insulating material. While lying comfortably on the treatment table or bed, the tent is placed over the table with the patient inside during the IR radiation phase, with their head outside the tent. Radiation is able to penetrate the skin to a depth where the blood can absorb the heat and spread it throughout the tissue and organs. Subsequently the body’s core temperature is safely heated within 1-2 hours. Once the desired temperature has been reached, the tent walls can be folded down and wrapped on to the patient to maintain the elevated core temperature.

Whole Body Hyperthermia Therapy is always performed under medically supervised conditions with continuous monitoring of vital signs, including:

  • Blood pressure;
  • PO2 (saturation of oxygen in the blood)
  • Pulse rate;
  • Respiratory rate

Effectiveness of Hyperthermia

The effectiveness of hyperthermia treatment is related to the temperature achieved during the treatment, as well as the length of treatment and cell and tissue characteristics).  It is known that hyperthermia can significantly increase the effectiveness of other treatments. When combined with radiation, hyperthermia is particularly effective at increasing the damage to acidic, poorly oxygenated parts of a tumor, and cells that are preparing to divide. Hyperthermia treatment is most effective when provided within 4 to 24 hours of the radiation. Whole body hyperthermia is an effective alternative treatment which is considered more advantageous for widespread (i.e. metastatic) cancers, than other types of hyperthermia treatments available.

Hyperthermia as Treatment for Chronic Pain and Inflammation

Hyperthermia can be used to help relieve stiffness and pain from arthritis or other muscle and joint problems. This involves using the hyperthermia device to induce an artificial increase in body temperature.  Heat is sometimes used with conventional therapy to help treat certain skin infections or inflammation.  It has been shown in clinical studies to help relieve symptoms such as arthritis pain if combined with with IV nutrient and vitamin therapy. Its use with other medical conditions, such as small skin infections, may help speed healing. (www.cancer.org)

At NIIM Gold Coast we offer a holistic plan to assist with Immune supporting therapies for cancer and plans for other patients on their journey to recovery, encompassing every aspect of their being while using the above modalities to help damage cancer cells, build immune defences and re-balance the ‘terrain’ of body, soul and spirit for quality of life.
